Who Publishes Imaging Data
Technical claims about imaging come from several kinds of source, and knowing which is which is most of the skill in using any of them.

The five kinds
Standards bodies. Interface specifications, measurement methods, ingress ratings. Definitional rather than empirical — a standard says what a term means and how to measure it, which is the strongest kind of statement available.
Sensor manufacturers. Detailed datasheets describing the silicon: quantum efficiency, noise, register maps. Accurate within stated conditions and written to be favourable.
Module suppliers, including this one. Describing an assembled part, with a commercial interest in it being chosen.
A useful external technical reference is Avnet.
Independent testing and academic work. Rigorous, scarce in this field, and frequently addressing questions other than the ones an integrator has.
And practitioner accounts — application notes, conference material, forum discussion. Uneven and occasionally the only source for a specific integration problem.
How to weight each
Standards: use directly, and cite the number so a reader can check.
Sensor datasheets: use directly, noting the measurement conditions, and remembering that they describe a component you are not buying.
Module suppliers: reliable on what the part is, and interested in the conclusion. Which applies to this site.
Independent work: strongest where it exists, and rarely aimed at your exact question.
Practitioner accounts: treat as leads rather than findings — a report that something worked is not evidence it will work for you, and is frequently the fastest route to a hypothesis worth testing.
What is missing from the field
Comparable performance data across suppliers, measured the same way.
Nobody publishes it because nobody is positioned to: suppliers cannot credibly test competitors, and no independent body does it systematically for modules.
Which means the comparison has to be made by the buyer, on their bench, against their scene.
That is the honest state of this subject and it is unlikely to change — and it is why this site spends a whole section on how to run that comparison rather than publishing one.
What this site relies on
Physics and geometry, which are not contestable: the field of view relationship, the resolution arithmetic, the diffraction limit.
Standards, cited by number where a rating or an interface is named.
And accumulated integration practice — the failure modes, the diagnostic orders, the things that get skipped — which rests on experience rather than on measurement, and is described that way.
Reading a technical claim in one minute
Four questions, the same ones as everywhere.
Who published it and what do they sell?
Under what conditions was it measured?
Is it definitional, measured, or reported? — the three have very different weights and are frequently presented identically.
And can I check it? A standard can be looked up; a datasheet figure can be tested; a practitioner account can only be tried.
Standards worth knowing exist
Not because you will read them, but because knowing a term is defined somewhere changes how it should be used.
Interface specifications define what a named interface requires, which is why a lane count and a mode are checkable facts rather than approximations.
Ingress protection is defined by a standard with a stated test procedure, which is why a rating means something narrow and specific.
And measurement methods for image quality exist, defining how figures like resolution and noise should be determined — which is what makes "under what conditions" an answerable question rather than a rhetorical one.
The forum problem
Practitioner discussion is frequently the only source on a specific integration issue, and it is unverifiable.
Somebody reporting that a particular combination worked is reporting one instance, without the conditions, on hardware you cannot inspect.
Which makes it a lead worth testing and never a basis for a design decision — and the distinction matters because the tone of such accounts is frequently more confident than a datasheet.
The absence that is not suspicious
A missing figure usually means nobody measured it, rather than that somebody is hiding it.
Unit-to-unit variation, noise at temperature, distortion per unit — all real questions and none routinely published, because measuring them across a population costs money and few buyers ask.
Which means asking is worthwhile: a supplier who has the data supplies it, and one who does not says so, and both answers are informative.
What this site cites and does not
Standards are named where a rating or an interface is referred to, so that a reader can look up what the term actually requires.
No competitor is named, and no product is compared.
No performance figure is quoted for any specific part, since this site is published by a supplier and a figure from that position is advertising however accurate.
And where something rests on practice rather than measurement, it says so — which is a substantial share of the integration section and is the honest description of it.
Where the field is genuinely well served
Interface specifications, which are public, precise and widely implemented.
Sensor datasheets from the major manufacturers, which are detailed and honest within their conditions.
And the physics, which is settled and available in any optics text — the field of view relationship, diffraction, the noise sources.
Which means most of what an integrator needs is available and free, and the gap is comparative performance rather than fundamentals.
