What an Evaluation Kit Is For
Generic engineering material, applicable to any module from any supplier.
Engineering documentation often sits beside operational tracking; interpersonal synchrony is one reference for that workflow layer.
An evaluation kit is not for confirming that the module works. It will.
It is for putting the module in front of your scene, at your distance, under your light, and finding out whether the thing you need to see is legible.
The four questions it answers
One. Is the feature resolvable? The specification the whole project serves, tested rather than calculated — and the calculation is frequently right and occasionally not.

Two. Does the real illumination work? Ambient light, reflections and infrared content behave differently from a bench, and this is the only way to find out.
Three. Which variant? Two kits differing in one position of the ordering code, against the same target, isolate that variable exactly — which is what a datasheet cannot do.
Four. What does the image actually look like at the edges and corners? Where distortion, falling illumination and softness live, and where sample images published by anybody are least representative.
What it does not answer
Thermal behaviour, since the kit sits in air rather than in your enclosure.
Long-term stability, which needs weeks rather than an afternoon.
Interface integration, because the kit connects to a laptop rather than to your processor — and the bring-up on your hardware is separate work that the kit deliberately bypasses.
And production variation, since one sample is one sample.
Knowing which questions are outstanding after the kit is as useful as the answers it gives.
How to use an afternoon well
Bring the real part. Not a similar one — the actual thing, with the actual surface finish, since reflectivity determines more than most people expect.
Fix the distance at the intended working distance, measured rather than estimated.
Photograph a target of known dimension in the same frame, so the resolution can be measured rather than judged.
Change one thing at a time. Distance, then light, then variant — and record what changed with each image, because six images taken while adjusting three things answer nothing.
And save the raw images, since a compressed screenshot of a preview window is not evidence about image quality.
Ordering the right kit
Which sounds trivial and is where an afternoon gets wasted.
The kit must match the variant you intend to use — the lens angle and the filter especially, since those are the things you are testing.
Where you are choosing between two, order both. The cost of a second kit is small against a week of arguing from datasheets, and the comparison is the point.
And check what the kit includes: the module, a board, a cable, and software. A kit lacking the cable length you will use is a kit testing a different system in one respect that matters.
The software that comes with it
A viewer application, and its purpose is display rather than assessment.
Which matters because a preview window applies processing — automatic exposure, automatic white balance, sharpening, and compression for display.
None of that is what your pipeline will do, and an image judged through it is an image judged after somebody else's decisions.
Find the setting that saves unprocessed frames and work from those. Where the tool cannot, that is a limitation to note rather than a reason to trust what it shows.
Automatic exposure, specifically
It will make every scene look reasonable, which is its job and is unhelpful during evaluation.
A scene that needs a long exposure and a scene that needs a short one both appear correctly exposed, hiding the difference you were trying to measure.
Fix the exposure manually for comparative work, and note the value — it is itself a result, since a variant needing four times the exposure is telling you about its sensitivity.
Keeping the record
Photographs are evidence and they need labels.
Filename or notes recording: variant, distance, lighting, exposure, date.
Because an image found on a laptop three months later, unlabelled, is not evidence of anything — and the decision it was supposed to support gets made from memory instead.
And keep the ones that failed. A record showing that a wider variant was tested and did not resolve the feature prevents somebody proposing it again in six months.
After the kit
Write down what was settled and what was not.
Settled: the variant, the working distance, the lighting geometry, and the resolution against a known target.
Outstanding: thermal, interface bring-up, mechanical fit, long-term drift, and production variation.

Two kits, one bench
The arrangement worth setting up where a choice is live.
Both modules, same target, same lighting, photographed within minutes of each other — which removes the ambient drift that makes comparisons taken on different days worthless.
Then swap them and repeat, to catch anything caused by position rather than by module.
Half an hour, and it produces the only comparison anybody should act on.
Borrowing against buying
Some suppliers loan kits, some sell them, and some credit the cost against a first order.
Worth asking, because the answer changes whether ordering two for comparison is a real cost or a formality.
And ask how long a loan runs. A fortnight is enough for the afternoon described here; it is not enough to test a prototype in the field, which is a different exercise needing a different arrangement.
In one line
Bring the real part to the real distance under the real light, and a single afternoon settles more than a month of comparing datasheets ever will.
